Training Office
The Training Office is staffed with 3
personnel and is responsible for managing all aspects of
training for PFRES. The three primary training areas
coordinated by the Training Office are:
Fire In-Service Training - In-service training
is provided to all members of the department to ensure that they
maintain proficiency in every area of fire department
operations, administration and management. Consisting of
didactic training as well as practical exercises, fire
department personnel are required to demonstrate competence in
everything that they might be expected to do. In-service
training also keeps department members current on new equipment
and evolving technologies as they are adopted by the department.
EMS Training - Continuous training is the price
necessary to maintain the high level of expertise of our EMS
providers. Both classroom and skills training is provided
to ensure that our providers continue to provide the citizens
and guests of Portsmouth with the most advanced emergency care
available.
.
Fire Training Academy - Personnel hired by
PFRES must complete a rigorous six month training program before
assignment to a fire company. This training is provided by
the Southside Regional Fire Academy. SRFA is staffed with
personnel from several local jurisdictions in order to fully
prepare newly hired personnel from each of the jurisdictions for
the fire and EMS duties they are to perform.
While PFRES does bring in subject matter experts from fire
service and EMS leaders throughout the country, the bulk of our
training is provided by department personnel who have
demonstrated competence in their areas of instruction and
received nationally recognized certification to teach others.
Many of our instructors also teach other fire and EMS personnel
throughout the state on their own time.
